Carl’s is the premier fencing and home improvement contractor in New Jersey. We maintain a 7-acre production facility and showrooms in Freehold and Toms River, NJ. We have locations in Toms River and Freehold. Our facility pictured here in Toms River is a one-stop shop, and includes product displays, shops dedicated to wood, vinyl, aluminum, chain link, decking, and railing, as well as on-site welding and a mechanic shop. Carl’s vast on-site resources can support nearly any type of installation for your project.
The Carl's Story
Carl’s Fencing, Decking, and Home Improvements, now one of the premier Home Improvement companies in the state of New Jersey, evolved from humble beginnings and a single fence crew. Carl Del Pizzo Sr., the founder of Carl’s, began installing fence in high school to earn extra money. Carl went off to study Business and Economics at Upsala College and continued to install fence on the side while attending classes.
Carl began his entrepreneurial career by developing and operating Playdrome Recreation Centers. He spent 20 years in this business, spanning to 14 locations for bowling, billiards, game rooms and restaurants. In 1996, however, the bowling industry began to change, and Carl saw the opportunity to change with it. He knew it was his time to start installing fence again.
While it was familiar territory being a fence installer, the landscape was different as Carl now was a subcontractor juggling the duties of running two businesses and raising his family. Carl began to see the many opportunities the fencing industry offered and so he started “Carl’s Fencing”. The company started with Carl, his wife Donna, and his three children, Carl Jr, Michelle, and Chrissy working from their home.
Within a short period of time, Carl’s was able to move into our current location at 1579 US 9 in Toms River. Steve Smykla joined the Carl’s family, and with a small, brown pickup truck and some used hand tools, Carl’s Fencing took off. Donna and Michelle worked in the office while Chrissy went out to sell fencing jobs. Carl had help installing these jobs from his son Carl Jr. and his son-in-law Bill while the two were attending college.
As Carl’s Fencing began to grow rapidly, they saw the opportunity to cross over into new territory: decks. With the expert help of Vinny I, Carl’s expanded to Carl’s Fencing and Decking as Vinny designed and built decks and pergolas.
In the crash of 2008, the company faced many difficulties. However, as a family, they were able to work through the struggles together. Soon with this growth, Carl’s brother David joined the company with his son Dave Jr. to run the decking division in 2010. With 30 years of experience in the home improvements industry including roofing, siding, and windows, David helped to expand the company once again. The company would now grow to become Carl’s Fencing, Decking, and Home Improvements.
Carl’s Fencing, Decking, and Home Improvements has truly been a family owned and operated company from the start. The company is now owned and operated by our CEO, Carl Jr and COO, Bill Rankin. These two, along with the help of David Sr., Dave Jr. and Carl Sr. run the company from the sales and installations to marketing and IT. They strive to make sure the company provides customers and the community with honesty, fairness, and the best quality products and services as promised since the first day in the small brown pickup truck.
