Although this type of siding is low maintenance, it does require some routine care and cleaning.
Over time, your home’s vinyl siding can build up dirt, grime, and stains due to pollen, bird and insect droppings, spider webs and rust. In shaded areas that accumulate moisture, mold and mildew growth is possible. Landscaping chemicals like insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers can also discolor your beautiful vinyl.
Cleaning vinyl siding is a fairly easy job and can typically be done using household products and items. You can use a soft cloth or a soft-bristle brush. Homemade cleaning solutions will also help get rid of any dirt, stains or grime on your vinyl siding. A 70% water, 30% white vinegar mixture will remove light mold and mildew stains. What about tough jobs that require a stronger cleaner? Mix together one-third cup powdered laundry detergent, two-thirds cup powdered household cleaner, one quart liquid laundry bleach and one gallon of water. To prevent streaking, start at the bottom and work up towards the top of the house. When cleaning vinyl siding, remember to thoroughly rinse away any residue as you go.
Beware of using cleaners with organic solvents, undiluted chlorine bleach. Also try to avoid cleaners like liquid grease remover, nail polish remover, or furniture polish, as these may cause damage to the surface of your vinyl siding. Stay away from tough scrubbing tools, like steel or wool scrubbers.
