Deck Railing Installation: Key Points to Keep in Mind

Deck railing installation is an important part of fully and properly installing your brand-new deck. Whether you are DIY, with an experienced friend, or an expert yourself, here are some key points to keep in mind when installing deck railing.

Do I Need a Deck Railing?

According to the International Residential Code (IRC) – any deck higher than 30” above the ground needs to have a safety railing. So if your deck is going to be 29” or lower to the ground, such as 2 feet high, it does not require a deck railing. However, for safety reasons, you should at least consider adding railing to your new or existing deck.

Deck railings are also required to be 36” high per the IRC. If you are installing deck railing at a commercial site, it will need to be 42” high. This measurement is taken from the floor of the deck to the top of the handrail.

Deck Railing Installation Considerations

Now that you know when you do and do not need deck railing, there are some other items to consider when conducting installation. In a quick, list they are:

  • Use
  • Maintenance
  • Environment
  • Sight
  • Material
  • Location

We have already touched on use, but consider it beyond residential or commercial. How many people are you expecting on your deck? Will you want additions like drink railing? If so, you should consider it now rather than later in the installation.

Material, maintenance, and environment all work in tandem with each other, too. Material options include metal, glass, wood, vinyl, and stainless steel among others. A material like glass would look beautiful, but it will require lots of maintenance.

Sight and location are the other key points to consider. If you’re installing your deck railing for a deck on beachfront property, you want to be able to see the beach as well with certain materials and designs. The same goes for a mountain view. Wood deck railing may look better in the mountains, for example, but not provide a great view where cable railing may be a better option.
