15 Balcony Railing Design Ideas

A balcony is a great addition to your home. It usually adds a great view to your yard. But, what if your balcony is looking a little worn out or dated? Your balcony can add curb appeal, so consider one of these updates for your railing.

Modern Metal

Simple aluminum balcony railings are always in style. Generally, more substantial looking than thin wrought iron, these railings look crisp and clean. You can get them in a variety of colors, from shiny metallic to matte black.

White Railings

You can paint all types of railings white. We love the look on big, bold railings. It gives a rich look to homes in all sizes and price points.

Grill Work

Traditionally made of wrought iron, a grill has simple designs on the railing. This is a classic look, which reminds us of the famous balconies in New Orleans’s French Quarter.

Glass Balconies

Want an unobstructed view? Consider a glass balcony. Made of metal railing with glass panels, these balconies are sturdy, safe, and visually stunning.

Black Glass

Want great views with a little more privacy? Instead of clear glass, consider black glass railings.

Black and Gold

If you want an over-the-top luxe look, consider accenting your black railings with gold. The look is palatial and really helps your balconies stand out.

Window Boxes

Consider railings with built in flower boxes. Flowers add visual appeal to your balconies, making them look both more expensive and more inviting.

Stone Railing

Want a more substantial look? Consider stone pillars and stone railings. These give a palatial, substantial look to your balconies. You can craft them out of natural stone or cast stone like concrete.

Horizontal Planks

The traditional balcony railing is vertical. Add interest by using horizontal rails, instead.

Circular Railings

If you are building a balcony from scratch, consider the shape of your balcony. A half-circle is a classic look, which lets you put a balcony in small spaces

Special Designs

There is no reason for your metal railings to be boring. You can order railings in a variety of different designs. Simple designs look great against brightly-colored homes. It makes the design stand out.

Wooden Railing

Wooden railings are classic. You see them on a lot of decks, but they give a classical and rustic look to balconies, as well. One of the best things about wooden railings is that they are customizable and can be painted to match your home’s color.

Concrete Railing

If you want a solid railing, concrete is a great choice. It creates perfect private balconies on multi-family buildings. However, it is also a great choice for modern architecture. Combine it with glass and metal for an even more modern look.

PVC Railing

Balcony railings do not have to be expensive to be substantial and safe. Consider PVC railings for their flexibility and affordability.

Colorful Railings

Railings are traditionally neutral, but they do not have to be. Consider adding a pop of color with your railings.
