How Long Will a Split Rail Fence Last?

How Long Will a Split Rail Fence Last?

If you are thinking about getting a split rail fence, then you will want to know how long it is going to last. There are several factors that impact that answer.

  • What type of wood are you using?
  • Will the wood be treated?
  • What is the soil composition?
  • How moist is it?
  • Are their pets in the area?
  • Is the environment harsh?
  • Will you follow maintenance recommendations?

So, keeping in mind that these factors can impact the lifespan of a split rail fence, they can last from 7 to 30 years. An untreated split rail fence made of spruce or pine may only last about 7 years. On the other hand, a cedar fence that you maintain can last 30 years or more.

Of course, when we install a fence, we take steps to ensure it will last as long as possible. That means using good products and materials. For fencing, we recommend cedar for split rail fences, but know that it is not always financially feasible for all of our clients. So, we take steps to protect your rails.

If it has been a while since the last time you got a split rail fence, you might be expecting certain things to protect the wood. Years ago, the standard was to put tar or creosote on wood that was going to be in the ground. However, that is not an environmentally friendly practice. Today, we can use sealants to help slow down water degradation.

Another issue people have with split rail fencing is that they can sag. You cannot really prevent this sag. However, by using heavier rails and posts, we can minimize sagging. Another design choice we make is using shorter rails which can help prevent sagging, too.

As you can see, a split rail fence is a good long-term investment. They provide visual interest and add curb appeal. They are also a great choice if you have livestock. Most people choose cedar because of its long-life. However, we can build you a long-lasting fence, even if you choose a less expensive wood. So, contact us today to get your estimate. We can go over your options and you can pick the one that is right from you. We can also give you a time estimate for the project, so you know how long it will take from start to finish.
